The first thing I thought was that it all felt like being in a TV show.

There were police and there was an ambulance outside a small house.

Rory panicked when she saw the ambulance, but Gary met us to tell us that everything was okay. That Cecily looked okay, but she needed to go to the hospital to get checked out just to be sure.

It all moved so fast too.

I had no idea how I was able to drive.

I didn’t remember a second of the drive.

Gary didn’t want us to meet him at the house but my father told us the address.

Nova was still wearing the damn towel I gave to her from her surfing.

Rory darted forward and Gary put his arm out.

“No!” she screamed at him.

I grabbed her arm. “Wait a second, Rory.”

“Fuck you,” she said to me.

“Where’s the baby?” Nova asked. “Don’t do this to her. She’s been through enough.”

“How did you even get here?” Gary asked.

“How did you find out about this place?” I asked.

“Got another tip,” Gary said. “This one worked out.”

I thought about my father.

Had had actually done something.

He hired someone to find Cecily and they did.

“Do you know this house, Rory?” I asked.

“No,” she said. “I don’t care about that right now. Where’s the…”

Rory covered her mouth.

I looked and saw Cecily.

Bundled up in a little blanket.

A female officer carrying her toward us.

“You’re going to have to go with her…” Gary started to say but stopped.

I pushed by him and ran forward.

Rory grabbed my hand and ran with me.

It was her.

It was Cecily.

Her chubby cheeks. Her eyes… little hands…

I couldn’t stop shaking.

Rory burst into tears as she took the baby from the officer.

The officer touched my back. “You’re going to need to go that way…”

She motioned for the ambulance.

“Give us a second,” I said.

I turned and put my hand to Cecily’s back.

“Oh, sweet girl,” Rory said. “You’re… oh, Cecily… I’m…”

Rory couldn’t find a breath.

“Try to stay calm, Rory,” I whispered. “You should go with her. I’ll meet you there. Okay?”

Rory looked at me. Tears everywhere.

“She’s okay,” I said to her. “Remember that. She’s okay. Look at how strong she is.”

“Elijah… I… I want you to know something… about us…”

“No, no,” I said. “I don’t want to talk about anything, Rory. Focus on Cecily. She’s the most important thing in the world right now.”

Rory nodded. “Yeah. Okay.”

Two EMTs met us and walked Rory to the ambulance.

I turned and Nova was there.

I grabbed her by the waist and pulled her close.

My throat felt like I had a cactus stuck in it.

A mix of relief and anger pouring through me.

“It’s okay,” Nova said. “She’s found. She’s safe. It’s okay.”

I broke away from Nova and looked at Gary. “Who did it? Who did this?”

“We have a lot of questions and answers to match up here, Elijah,” Gary said.

“What the hell does that mean?” I asked.

“We’ll all meet at the hospital, okay? First thing we need to do is make sure little Cecily is okay.”

I looked back at the house.

The front door was wide open.
